Parking the car is always more fun in Vegas baby!
Las Vegas, NV (7/14) |
The Ramada we're staying at in Las Vegas is connected to this casino (about
2 miles from "the Vegas strip"), which is conveniently open 24 hours a day,
in case we get the urge to gamble at 3:47 in the morning. |
We decided to head to the Hoover Dam today (7/14) instead of the Vegas
strip. Just before we arrived at the dam, we stopped at an overlook by
Lake Mead, which is fed by the Colorado River and dammed by the Hoover Dam. |
In case you missed it, Elena wants to be sure you know that this is Lake
Mead |
Photo op in the visitor center - this was the only thing we could do for
free without paying an entry fee for the dam tour. We left the center
after we took these pics. |
Walk this way... |
I'm sure you can't tell, but it was literally "dam" hot today! (Like
no one's ever heard THAT one before!) |
It's hard to get a good shot of the dam without a good wide-angle lens.
(If anyone's listening, my birthday is in about 6 months!) |
The view downstream from the top of the dam |
The view upstream - Lake Mead
itself is up and around the corner to the left. Notice the hard line
where the rock turns from white to brownish-red. The waterline, I
presume. |
|
The dam is right on the border of Nevada and Arizona. As we started
walking across the bridge, it was 12:40pm in Nevada. By the time we
reached the other side a few minutes later, it was an hour later and we were
standing in Arizona. |
Lake Mead water feeding the bay formed by the Hoover Dam |
After the Hoover Dam, we went back to our hotel room to get our bathing
suits, then headed back to Lake Mead for a refreshing evening swim. |
The water was cool and helped
keep the hot air in check. The floor of the lake was surprisingly
thick and gooey feeling as our feet sank in with each step. |
|
|
A very lucky shot |
|
We drove down Las Vegas
Boulevard, but on a Saturday night, it was crowded as all-git-out, so we
decided to call it a night. |
The next day, after doing Vegas right (i.e., seeing the new Harry Potter
movie), Elena's cousin Jon and his wife Katherine (possibly spelled
Catherine) treated us to a fine Mexican meal (7/15) |
We ate at Super Mex and had the hostess pull double duty, having her take
our picture after dinner. |
|
After dinner, Elena and I spent a wild night here at the Hard Rock Casino -
for about 20 minutes! We played the MegaBucks slots but came up, not
surprisingly, MegaEmpty! That's how we roll baby! |
