Our final morning with the Nichols, where we joined Josh at the bus stop
before we left a few hours later.

I call this picture,
"Transformation!" |
Can you feel the love? |
Our final goodbye before Josh got on the bus. A sad goodbye for us,
but great memories of the past five days with all of the Nichols. |
Elena gets our final two bags of ice for the cooler as we get gas for the
trip to Chicago |
Elena crawls to get something from the back of the van as we cannot open the
back due to having the bikes on the rack. Thumbs up Elena, thumbs up. |
On our drive from Des Moines, IA to Chicago, IL, Elena was updated by her
family that her grandmother's health was deteriorating rapidly and she would
likely not make it through the next day. We decided then to cut our
visit short with my sister, Samantha, and her husband, Michael, in Chicago,
only spending the night and leaving early the next day to make it back to
Connecticut to be with Elena's family. When we arrived in Chicago, we
took a short walk to the Village Tap Bar & Grill for some veggie burgers and
fries. We called it an early night so we could be refreshed for the
next day's long drive home. |
An early start to the day, we left Chicago at 6am as we started our
near-1,000 mile journey back home. These next few shots, the last we
took as our trip officially came to an end in the evening, are of the
sunrise over the city of Chicago. (8/28) |

This was our last shot of the
sunrise around Chicago. We eventually arrived in Connecticut late in the
evening after about 16 hours of driving (17 with the time change).
Though we didn't get any pictures of it, the moon rose in the east, directly
in front of us as dusk fell upon us and we crossed New York and into
Connecticut. Though we missed the lunar eclipse (which I think
happened in the wee hours of the predawn morning earlier today) the moon was
a huge, brilliant orange circle in the sky - a nice welcome home after a
great and unforgettable trip across America. (8/28) |
