Waiting for the
twilight tour of the Cliff Palace ruins, this little guy paid us a visit,
Mesa Verde National Park, Mesa Verde, CO (6/20) |
The Cliff Palace
from up on high |
A face-like rock
structure |
Getting closer
to the Cliff Palace |
|
The park ranger
playing "Charlie Mason," the "discoverer" of the Cliff Palace back in 1888 |
Peeking into the
tower at Cliff Palace |
Our friend
Randy, in the background, listening to "Charlie" intently |
|
|
The view from the Cliff Palace as the sun set behind these rocks |
Romona (grandmother from the Navajo Diné clan), from The Roach Family
Dancers, dancing a healing dance in her medicinal "jingle" dress
Cortez, CO (6/21) |
Grandson Blue Star Boy, 4 years old, showing us his rendition of a PowWow
dance |
Norman (grandfather from Lakota Sioux) showing us the very intricate Hoop
Dance
|
The Fancy Shawl Dance |
We joined in The Friendship Dance |
This was not "PhotoShopped" - this was the real deal flying over the Cortez
Cultural Center |
The view from our campground in Mesa Verde, CO (6/22) |
|
Not to be outdone by a teenage girl who struck the same pose, Elena shows us
she's still got it! One hand and one foot in each of the four states
at the Four Corners National Monument (6/22)
|
Less nimble, Jonathan shows us his grapes!
|
Four Corners National Monument from a distance |
|
|
Our new friend, Wayne, who offered to take our picture if we took his, tells
Elena about his mission trip to help the Navajos. Thus began our
detour as "Lutheran missionaries!" |
|
|
The free campsite at Canyon de Chelly was apparently also home to tame
"wild" dogs roaming the premises
Chinle, AZ (6/22) |
Tame wild dog #2 |
Even tame wild dogs need to show their teeth once in a while! |
View from atop Canyon de Chelly (6/23) |
|
|
Elena attempts to educate: The canyon is "THIS BIG!!!" |
Can you see a skull in this mountain face? |
|
Proudly wearing his new cowboy hat, Jonathan moseys down the canyon |
|
|
|
|
The White House ruins at the base of the canyon |
Looking up from the ruins |
|
|
This trail of school children left us in their dust!
|
Jonathan catches his breath after climbing back to the top of the canyon |
After traveling from Canyon de
Shelly to Gallup/Rehoboth, NM, we went with Bill, Lona and granddaughter
Mandy to Wal-Mart for the next day's lunch fixins. Who knew Lutherans
loved Wal-Mart as much as us?!?! (6/24) |
Mike, Wayne, and Lynn discussing
something important, I'm sure, as we prepared for evening devotionals by
sunset |
