DAY 8:  Monday, April 23, 2007 (Columbia, SC)

What a day!  Today was what Jonathan likes to call a "travel day".  We left North Carolina by way of route 64 heading south east into Highlands, a beautiful wooded town inside Nantahala Nat'l Forest.  Here we stopped along the byway to see two natural waterfalls.  Dry Falls was the first.  It was huge and loud and everything you could possibly want in a waterfall.  We walked down a short path to get a better view and some nice pictures and video.  Then we continued down 64 to the second fall; Bridal Veil Falls.  This one starts high up on a steep rock and trickles down the rocks in a long, thin stream like a "bridal veil" over a little gorge right off the side of the road.  Though less impressive than the Dry Falls, what it lacks in ferocity it makes up for in simplicity and grace.  I can see where it gets it's name.  After this short, but scenic and wonderful stop we continued on to South Carolina.  It quickly became a balmy 94 degrees once we arrived at our destination in Columbia, after about three hours of driving.  We decided to take it easy the rest of the day, since both of us are still quite tired (and sore) from our steep hike yesterday in the Smoky Mountains.  After a (second!!) trip to Wal-Mart today (and hopefully the last for many months to come- you know, unless we need more fruit and veggies, or Jonathan needs another Summer wardrobe) we grabbed some dinner at a charming and quaint spot the locals call "The Olive Garden".  Then back to the ranch for more R & R.  Not much else to report afterward, except to mention that we finally had a chance to connect once again to the internet, check our emails, reply to family and friends, and post more of our journals, pictures and our map trail.  I have to really hand it to Jonathan who created this website and is the one who does all of the technical stuff- like attaching these journal entries, uploading and posting the pictures, updating the map, inserting the quotes, etc.  I know he's probably going to be a little embarrassed and tell me not to say all of this in here (he's so modest!), but this whole website is really thanks to him.  All I do is write every other day and look at all the cool stuff he's doing to make this site so special.  So I guess we can all be grateful that he's so computer savvy.  If it was up to me, you might just get a post card every now and then, and that's it!!  I will mention here that we (and by "we" I mean Jonathan) won't be able to post new info to the site as often as we'd like, because we aren't always located somewhere with wireless internet access.  We still love hearing from you though, and will reply to emails as often as we can.  Thanks for your continued enthusiasm and support!!  ~ E

DAY 9:  Tuesday, April 24, 2007 (Savannah, GA)

Today we ended up driving straight to Savannah, GA and spending the afternoon doing a self-guided walking tour of historic downtown Savannah.  We only did about half, as it was getting late, we were getting hungry, and we were getting hungry (what can I say - when you gotta eat, you gotta eat, am I right?!).  An old friend I used to work with, Erin, moved to Savannah a few years ago, and mentioned that Paula Deen (an apparent Food Network "star") has a restaurant in downtown Savannah.  So we looked it up and, sure enough, my friend wasn't lying - Paula's restaurant, called "The Lady & Sons," was right downtown.  Even though we're traveling on a budget (or trying to do so anyway), we decided to go for it.  The food was, well... it was pretty darn good, so whoever this Paula person is, keep up the good work!

We've heard that Savannah is "America's Most Haunted City" (thus dubbed by the American Institute of Parapsychology in 2002), and we may spend some time tomorrow exploring some of the reasons why.  Lots of movies have also been filmed here (Forest Gump, Roots, Glory, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, and the Legend of Bagger Vance, to name a few), and apparently there are movie tours to enjoy.  Oh, and apparently Savannah has lots of history to find out about too.  Lots of choices for tomorrow.  Can you stand the suspense?  Until then...  ~J

DAY 10:  Wednesday, April 25, 2007 (Savannah, GA)

We started our second day in Savannah by riding our bikes through the second half of the self-guided tour we started yesterday through historic downtown Savannah.  This was our first outing on our bikes since beginning our trip, and they were pretty filthy from being on the back of the minivan for almost two weeks.  Also, my seat was still wet from the beginning of the trip when it rained for about three days straight.  So for most of the day I was a bit soggy- but we had a great time nonetheless.  We visited more of Savannah's beautiful quarters, surrounded by historic houses, and full of lovely live oaks with hanging Spanish moss.  Everywhere you go it smells like Spring flowers in full bloom.  It was a very temperate and breezy ride- the weather in Savannah has been glorious.  We stopped for a quick bite to eat before taking a free ferry ride across the river.  Unfortunately the ride was about five minutes long, and only took us directly across the river and back. But hey, it was a free ferry ride!  We headed back "home" and had time for a cat nap before meeting Jonathan's friend Erin from a previous life as a "business analyst" at ING.  Erin picked us up and took us to one of her favorite local restaurants: Pearl's Saltwater Grill.  It is a really great place right on the water.  Dinner was delicious and Erin was kind enough to treat us.  She also made us a compilation CD of travel songs inspired by our adventure.  Thanks, Erin!  It was a true delight!!

Savannah has been a great place to visit.  The people have been extremely kind and generous.  Two people stopped what they were doing to help us find what we were looking for- that "southern hospitality" thing is for real!  Also, the downtown area is really lovely.  There are lots of fun shops to visit and great restaurants.  (I'd like to mention here that I am quite familiar with Paula Deen and her show on the Food Network, and was pretty psyched to eat at her place- it was very tasty indeed!!)  We have really enjoyed our stay here- brief though it was.  Tomorrow we are traveling to Kissimmee, Florida to stay with Jonathan's folks for the night before heading to Miami Beach for Jonathan's friend Dave's wedding.  After that, the wild, wild west is calling... ~E
