Walking into the Taos Pueblo
(sometimes pronounced "Pub-lo"), Taos, NM (6/11) |
|
The main church in the Taos
Pueblo, still used today - mass is held every Sunday, and visitors are
welcome to attend |
About 90% of the Taos Indians
practice both Catholicism and "Indian" religions; about 10% practice only
their native Indian religion |
This bell tower was destroyed in
two separate wars. This cemetery was still used up until recently when
it became full and they began using another one. |
|
Notice the straw in the adobe
structure behind a waterlogged Elena |
|
13-year-old Edward ("Aspen Mist")
was quite personable and is well on his way to being a top notch public
relations person, based on his inquisitive interactions with us. We
bought one of his card creations- hand-painted scenes of the Pueblo |
Edward's grandmother and
bookkeeper, Isabel
|
Ovens made out of earth, water,
and straw |
I don't think this one is
functional anymore |
The door on one of the adobe
structures |

Outside of one of the Pueblo
shops |
Also just outside of one of the
shops- deer antlers are considered magical
|
This multi-level adobe structure
is said to have been built over 1,000 years ago |
This stream running between the
two main structures in the Pueblo is the people's drinking water, which
flows from the sacred, ceremonial Blue Lake |
This guy was walking his horse at the Pueblo... |
Okay, so it wasn't a horse; it's actually a Neapolitan Mastiff (a.k.a., a
horse!) |
This is the woman who sold us her mud-oven baked bread, baked in the oven in
the next picture. She gets up every day at 3am to start baking.
We bought some bread and pumpkin cookies. |
Whatever she doesn't see during the day, she gives to her family and
friends. |
Dogs a-plenty at the Pueblo, waiting for someone to break the rules and feed
them... |
A few more... |
Yes? Can I help you? |
Shooo! |
|

|
She's got the look! |
How much fun can one have at a meter at the Taos Plaza? I think this
picture answers this question! (6/11) |
Too bad I left my sheep's clothing back in Connecticut! |
I can't bear to look! |
Just outside of the candy/chocolate/ice cream shop, Elena cozies up with one
of the locals |
Now that's a belly laugh! |
|
Down at the Old
Blinking Light, we enjoyed the musical stylings of Michael Hearne, who plays
there every Monday night. |
This waitress, Kelly, came up to sing a few songs, including Janis Joplin's
"Me and Bobby McGee," which she nailed. She's even featured on one of
Michael's CDs recorded live at The Old Blinking Light. |
